The Parkinson’s Disease Society hopes to use Parkinson’s Awareness Week to raise awareness of the illness and promote the assistance that is available to sufferers.
Around 10,000 people are diagnosed with Parkinson’s every year, and current estimates suggest that there are 120,000 people in the UK who suffer from the progressive, neurological disease. As it advances, people increasingly rely on care and assistance to manage even the most basic of tasks, and yet a recent study conducted by Age Concern shows that over £100 million in entitled benefits have not been claimed by older people across the UK.
Through their recently launched ‘Your Rights’ campaign, Age Concern is aiming to encourage older people to claim benefits which are rightfully theirs and hopes to put over £100 million more into older people’s pockets.
With the extra income available from accessing all available financial assistance, it may be possible to access care in the home. The Parkinson’s Disease Society has 200 specialist nurses available to assist sufferers, however there are obviously not enough currently to cover each and every area. Other care in the home is available though, whether that be for sufferers of all stages of Parkinson’s, for recuperative care after an operation, or simply for companionship or to help with the taking of prescribed medicines.
Melissa Gane, Marketing Manager of Advantage Healthcare, one of the UK’s leading healthcare solutions organisations, explained: “We are delighted to publicly voice our support for the work that the Parkinson’s Disease Society and Age Concern are doing to ensure people are able to access the resources they are entitled to.”
“This week is an excellent opportunity for organisations like ours to promote the availability of care and assistance. We work with a number of Parkinson’s Disease sufferers and their families to provide a full spectrum of support. Of course we also work with many hundreds of other older people, and have been trying to raise awareness of the fact that care is available in their own homes.”
“The figures recently released by Age Concern are truly shocking, and I have seen firsthand what a difference just one or two visits from a specialist carer can make to peoples lives" the money not being claimed could in most cases easily cover their care needs and ensure that they can stay in their own home.”
